A pandemic is a global disease outbreak. An influenza pandemic occurs when a new influenza A virus emerges for which there is little or no immunity in the human population, it begins to cause serious illness, and then spreads easily person-to-person worldwide. Influenza pandemics have occurred at least during the last four centuries. There have been three influenza pandemics in the last 100 years and several ongoing pandemic threats; a very severe pandemic in 1918-1919 (“Spanish Influenza”, “The Great Pandemic”), two milder pandemics in 1957-1958 (“Asian Flu”) and 1968-1969 (“Hong Kong Flu”), two pandemic “threats” in 1976 (“Swine Flu”) and 1977 (“Russian Flu”), and two ongoing pandemic “threats” beginning in 1997 (A/H5N1, “Avian Flu”, “Bird Flu”) and 1999 (A/H9N2).

In 1918 - 1919 the world experienced an influenza pandemic so severe that it infected one fifth of the world’s population. It infected 28% of all Americans (http://virus.stanford.edu/uda). No one knows exactly how many people died during the 1918-1919 influenza pandemic. During the 1920s, researchers estimated that 21.5 million people died as a result of the 1918-1919 pandemic. More recent estimates of global mortality from this pandemic claim between 30 and 100 million people died from influenza during this period. The 1918-1919 influenza pandemic occurred in three waves in the United States killing an estimated 675,000 Americans (Hatchett et al., 2007).

Although commonly referred to as the “Spanish Influenza”, the 1918 influenza pandemic is thought to have originated at Fort Riley, Kansas in March, 1918. American soldiers crowded on troop ships spread the disease to Europe and later back to the United States. Troop movements during World War I (WWI) quickly spread the disease worldwide and killed more soldiers than the fighting did. By fall 1918, the influenza had mutated into a very virulent form. The war brought the virus back into the U.S. for the second wave of the pandemic. The busy port city of Boston was the first in the country to be struck by this wave in late August 1918 and suffered more losses than any other American city. During the week ending October 7 1918, officials reported 1,023 deaths from influenza in Boston alone (now considered to be an underestimate of the actual influenza deaths). Between September 1, 1918 and January 16, 1919, more than 45,000 people died from influenza in Massachusetts (Hatchett et al, 2007). In the month of October 1918, 200,000 Americans died of influenza. The effect of the influenza pandemic was so severe in the U.S., that the average life span was depressed by 10 years (http://virus.stanford.edu/uda/).

The flu was most deadly for people ages 20 to 40. This pattern of morbidity was unusual for influenza which usually kills the very young and the elderly. Of the U.S. soldiers who died in Europe during WWI, half were killed by the flu (43,000) and not by the enemy (http://virus.stanford.edu/uda/.) Many people died very quickly from this flu; some feeling well in the morning were sick by noon and dead by nightfall. Those who survived the first few days of the disease often died later of complications such as bacterial pneumonia.

1918-1919 Influenza Pandemic in Idaho

Pandemic influenza arrived in Idaho sometime before the end of September, 1918. The Public Health Service did not require states to report influenza before September 27, 1918. On September 30th, officials reported several cases of influenza in Canyon County. Less than two weeks later, the number of cases had grown to such an extent that the state was unable to track the disease accurately. By late October, influenza cases were reported from Boise, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho Falls, Lewiston, Moscow, Pocatello, Twin Falls, Wallace, and many other towns.

In 1918-1919 most of the population of Idaho lived in rural areas (1920 census = 431,866 with no cities or towns having a population of more than 70,000). Rural Idaho suffered terribly from the pandemic. Russell Clark, a resident of Paris, Idaho remembered the impact of the pandemic this way: “There was a feeling of depression and sadness because neighbors, you see, were passing away." The mortality rate was nearly 50 percent in Paris, Idaho.

State officials and newspapers urged calm. In Rexburg, the local paper insisted that there was “no occasion for panic” but then went on to discuss the need to enforce the town’s quarantine. The Northern Idaho News of Sandpoint also urged calm, but then noted that, as a precautionary measure, schools would be closed indefinitely, and churches, picture shows and all public gatherings of every kind would be prohibited. The newspaper also issued a warning to parents to keep their children away from the railway depots as a precaution against infection. To their dismay, many officials found that quarantines had no real impact on the spread of the disease.

Watkin L. Roe from The Franklin County Citizen Newspaper wrote to Surgeon General Rupert Blue on the behalf of “many prominent citizens” in January 1919. He wrote “this county has been closed tight, that is so far as schools, academy, theaters, and picture shows are concerned.” But, he noted, “In looking up similar conditions in other towns, we find that the said towns have been opened in spite of the prevalence of the epidemic. And reviewing these cases, we find that the conditions in those places have been much worse that what we have had in this section.” Roe wrote that 1,300 of the county’s 7,500-8,000 residents had been sickened by the flu and 31 had died. Mr. Roe asked the Surgeon General if there was “any virtue in the vaccines and serums which the doctors are using.” What was a community to do? How could officials know when the disease had truly run its course? The Surgeon General did not send an answer.

Though social distancing measures likely helped, many Idahoans were still afflicted. In Idaho, as elsewhere, the disease simply ran its course, unchecked by actions taken by state, local or federal officials. While influenza rates lessened during the late fall, it was not until the summer of 1919 that the disease began to disappear from the state.

At the Idaho State Pandemic Influenza Summit held in Boise on March 27, 2006 the Secretary of Health and Human Services, Mike Leavitt warned Idahoans:

The final toll that the pandemic took in Idaho will never be known. But the echoes of suffering and loss remain. When it comes to pandemics, there is no rational basis to believe that the early years of the 21st century will be different than the past. If a pandemic strikes, it will come to Idaho.

Influenza among the American Indians 1918-1919

Native Americans suffered disproportionately from the 1918 influenza pandemic. The Bureau of Indian Affairs was overwhelmed as influenza swept through rural reservations, killing thousands. During the period from October 1st 1918 to March 31st 1919, there were 73,651 reported cases of influenza and 6,270 deaths out of a total Indian population of 304,854. This case mortality rate of 8.5% was substantially higher than that of the general population (2.5%). The reporting of the attacks is probably incomplete, suggesting even higher mortality in the American Indian population. The mortality varied in different localities especially being high among the Indians of the Mountain States (Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming). Out of a total Indian population in these Mountain States of 91,475, the attacks numbered 32,285 and of these 3,553 or 11 per cent, died. The highest mortality occurred among the Indians in Utah, Colorado, Idaho, Arizona, and New Mexico. Out of a reported population of 4,208 Indians in Idaho, there were 650 influenza cases and 75 deaths (case mortality of 11.5%). 1957-1958 Influenza Pandemic (“Asian Flu”)

The 1957-1958 Pandemic was first detected in Asia in February 1957. Because of improved surveillance and technology, the novel virus was identified quickly and vaccine production began in May 1957. Limited supplies of vaccine were available by August. The pandemic arrived in the United States during the summer of 1957. Infection rates were highest in school-age children, young adults, and pregnant women while death rates were highest in the elderly. A second wave hit the U.S. in January and February of 1958, this time infecting mostly elderly people. The Asian Flu pandemic caused at least 70,000 deaths in the United States and an estimated 1-2 million deaths worldwide. In Idaho, 49 deaths were attributed to the pandemic (Idaho Department of Health and Welfare Bureau of Health Policy and Vital Statistics).

1968-1969 Influenza Pandemic (“Hong Kong Flu”)

The mildest pandemic of the 20th century was first detected in Hong Kong in early 1968. The first cases in the United States began in September, but the pandemic didn’t become widespread there until December. Deaths peaked in December 1968 and January 1969, mostly in those over 65 years old. A combination of factors are credited with the relatively mild nature of this pandemic. First, the Hong Kong Flu was similar to the Asian Flu of 1958-1959, affording some immunity to those living during those years. Second, infection rates did not become high until near the school holidays in December so school children were not infecting each other or their families. Lastly, improved medical care and medications reduced the number of complications from flu and probably reduced mortality attributed to the pandemic. The Hong Kong flu caused nearly 34,000 deaths in the United States. In Idaho, 61 people died from pandemic influenza in 1968-1969 (Idaho Department of Health and Welfare Bureau of Health Policy and Vital Statistics).

Pandemic “Threats” in the 20th and 21st Centuries

The “Swine Flu” of 1976 was identified in Fort Dix, New Jersey and at first was thought to be related to the 1918 virus. A mass vaccination of US citizens contained the threat to the Fort Dix area and later research determined that the virus would probably not have been as serious at the 1918 pandemic if it had spread.

In May 1977 the “Russian Flu” emerged in north China and spread rapidly in children and young adults worldwide. Because of similarities to other A/H1N1 viruses that had circulated before 1957, most people over 23 years of age had some immunity to the disease and therefore the epidemic was not considered a true pandemic. Vaccine for this virus was not available during the 1977-1978 flu season, but the virus was included in the seasonal vaccine for the 1978-1979 flu season.

In 1997 (A/H5N1, “Avian Flu”, “Bird Flu”) and 1999 (A/H9N2) two new influenza pandemic threats emerged in Hong Kong. Both of these avian viruses have infected humans directly without having been altered first by infecting pigs as an intermediate host. These viruses are currently found in birds. In 1999, two children were infected and became ill with A/H9N1. After initially killing 18 people in Hong Kong in 1997 (www.PandemicFlu.gov), the A/H5N1 virus has gone on to infect at least 387 people (confirmed by WHO) in 15 countries killing 245 (confirmed by WHO) as of September 10, 2008. The highest number of deaths has occurred in Indonesia where 82% of those who are infected have died. Much of the current pandemic preparedness efforts in Idaho, the United States, and elsewhere in the world have been predicated on the potential of A/H5N1 becoming the next pandemic influenza. Human-to-human transmission of the virus has occurred, but only in a few instances on a very limited basis between family members and close contacts.

Unless the virus becomes easily transmissible between humans through mutations or genetic drift, A/H5N1 will not become a pandemic. Μετονομασία σε "νέα γρίπη"

Η Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή προτείνει να αλλάξει η ονομασία "γρίπη των χοίρων" σε "νέα γρίπη" ώστε να αποφευχθούν καταστροφικές οικονομικές συνέπειες για τη βιομηχανία της χοιροτροφίας.

"Αποφασίσαμε να μιλάμε από τώρα για νέα γρίπη ("novel flu" στα αγγλικά) ώστε αυτό να μην έχει αρνητική επίπτωση στη βιομηχανία μας, ιδιαίτερα σε περίοδο κρίσης", εξήγησε σήμερα η ευρωπαία επίτροπος Υγείας Αντρούλα Βασιλείου στη διάρκεια συνέντευξης Τύπου στις Βρυξέλλες.

"Προκαλέσαμε κακούς συνειρμούς αναφορικά με την κατανάλωση του χοιρινού" μιλώντας για γρίπη των χοίρων, υπογράμμισε. Όμως "η κατανάλωση του χοιρινού είναι εντελώς ασφαλής, με την προϋπόθεση ότι το κρέας είναι ψημένο", διευκρίνισε.

Πολλές χώρες, ιδιαίτερα της Ασίας, αποφάσισαν να σταματήσουν τις εισαγωγές χοιρινού από το Μεξικό και από ορισμένες Πολιτείες των ΗΠΑ στις οποίες έχουν υπάρξει αποδεδειγμένα κρούσματα γρίπης των χοίρων.

Όμως τα χοιροτροφεία δεν είναι, μέχρις αποδείξεως του αντιθέτου, υπεύθυνα για την επιδημία της γρίπης που προήλθε από το Μεξικό, δήλωσε τη Δευτέρα ο Γενικός Διευθυντής του Παγκόσμιου Οργανισμού για την Υγεία των Ζώων (OIE) Μπερνάρ Βαλά.

"Βρισκόμαστε σε συζητήσεις με τον Παγκόσμιο Οργανισμό Υγείας (ΠΟΥ) για να δούμε ποια θα ήταν η καταλληλότερη ονομασία", πρόσθεσε ο Βαλά.

Οι χοιροτρόφοι της ΕΕ αντιμετωπίζουν προβλήματα ήδη εδώ και πολλές εβοδμάδες εξαιτίας της πτώσης της τιμής του χοιρινού και ζητούν από την Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή να παρέμβει για να τους βοηθήσει να ξεπεράσουν αυτή την δύσκολη φάση. Προς το παρόν η Επιτροπή αρνείται οποιαδήποτε υποστήριξη.

Δεν αποδίδουν οι θερμικές κάμερες
Οι υγειονομικοί έλεγχοι στα σύνορα, και ιδιαίτερα αυτοί που πραγματοποιούνται με θερμικές κάμερες στα αεροδρόμια, "δεν αποδίδουν" όσον αφορά τον εντοπισμό επιβατών μολυσμένων από τον ιό της γρίπης των χοίρων, προειδοποίησε σήμερα ο Παγκόσμιος Οργανισμός Υγείας.

Οι θερμικές κάμερες, οι οποίες ανιχνεύουν τους εμπύρετους επιβάτες, βρίθουν ωστόσο στα αεροδρόμια, ιδιαίτερα της Ασίας, όπου αυτή η τεχνική εγκαινιάστηκε όταν ξέσπασε η κρίση του Συνδρόμου Οξείας και Σοβαρής Ανεπάρκειας του Αναπνευστικού Συστήματος (SARS) το 2003.

"Αν ένα άτομο έχει εκτεθεί στον ιό ή αν έχει μολυνθεί (...) αυτό το άτομο μπορεί να μην εμφανίζει συμπτώματα στο αεροδρόμιο", είπε στους δημοσιογράφους ο εκπρόσωπος του Οργανισμού, Γκρέγκορι Χαρτλ, εξηγώντας ότι οι θερμικές κάμερες "δεν εντοπίζουν άτομα τα οποία βρίσκονται ακόμα στη φάση επώασης της νόσου".

Ο ίδιος επεσήμανε ότι οι μελέτες που έχουν γίνει από την εποχή της κρίσης του SARS έδειξαν ότι οι έλεγχοι στα σύνορα δεν απέδωσαν ιδιαίτερα στην προσπάθεια κατά της εξάπλωσης του ιού.

"Οσο προχωρούμε, μαθαίνουμε. Το SARS μας έμαθε πολλά", κατέληξε ο εκπρόσωπος.

Με μεγαλοδικηγόρους οι Ζωνιανοί

Κάτω από πρωτοφανή μέτρα ασφαλείας και με 41 κατηγορουμένους στο εδώλιο ξεκίνησε την Τρίτη στο Εφετείο Αθηνών η δίκη των Ζωνιανών για την αιματηρή ενέδρα τον Δεκέμβρη του 2007 σε αστυνομικούς με θύμα τον ειδικό φρουρό Στάθη Λαζαρίδη, ο οποίος νοσηλεύεται ακόμη. Το πιο εντυπωσιακό στοιχείο της δίκης που δεν έμεινε ασχολίαστο, είναι το γεγονός, ότι οι πλέον καλοπληρωμένοι δικηγόροι της Αθήνας έχουν αναλάβει την υπεράσπιση των… βοσκών και των αγροτών από τα Ζωνιανά.

Το γεγονός αυτό σχολίασε και ο πρόεδρος του Σωματείου Ειδικών Φρουρών Βασίλης Ντούμας, ο οποίος δήλωσε ότι «οι μέχρι χθες φτωχοί και κατατρεγμένοι Ζωνιανοί βλέπουμε σήμερα να κατέχουν το βαρύ πυροβολικό της δικηγορίας». Τα γεμάτα από γνωστούς δικηγόρους έδρανα της υπεράσπισης ήταν και η πρώτη έκπληξη για τον πατέρα του ειδικού φρουρού, που συνεχίζει να δίνει μάχη ζωής. Όπως είπε ο Γιάννης Λαζαρίδης «έχουν τους καλύτερους. Τον Κούγια. Έχουν τα λεφτά. Εμένα μου ζήτησαν 9.000 ευρώ. Που να τα βρω; Ενώ αυτοί, τρέχει το ναρκωτικό». Ο συνήγορος κατηγορουμένων Αλέξης Κούγιας με αφορμή την αναφορά στο όνομά του, δήλωσε ότι «υπάρχουν θρύλοι για τις αμοιβές μας. Δεν με επέλεξε η οικογένεια του ειδικού φρουρού. Θα ήταν τιμή μου να με είχε επιλέξει».

Οι 41 συνολικά κατηγορούμενοι λογοδοτούν για τις χασισοκαλλιέργειες στο Μυλοπόταμο, τις κλοπές των ΑΤΜ από τράπεζες της Κρήτης και την απόπειρα δολοφονίας των ειδικών φρουρών στην ενέδρα των Ζωνιανών. Οι 14 από τους κατηγορούμενους είναι προφυλακισμένοι, αλλά σε λίγο συμπληρώνονται τα πρώτα 18μηνα. Στην δίκη θα καταθέσουν 350 μάρτυρες, ενώ οι κατηγορούμενοι θα απολογηθούν για τον μισό ποινικό κώδικα. Στο πινάκιο αντιστοιχεί σε κάθε όνομα μία σελίδα κατηγοριών. Υπό το φόβο μιας βεντέτας η δίκη μεταφέρθηκε στο Εφετείο Αθηνών και άρχισε κάτω από δρακόντεια μέτρα της Αστυνομίας.

Εν τω μεταξύ, ο κοινοτάρχης των Ζωνιανών Κώστας Παρασύρης δήλωσε την Τρίτη, ότι βρέθηκε οικόπεδο για να στεγάσει το Αστυνομικό Τμήμα, αν και εκείνος δεν είχε διαπιστώσει κανένα άβατο. Όπως είπε χαρακτηριστικά «στην κοινωνία υπάρχει παραβατικότητα. Έτσι και στο δικό μου χωριό». Η δίκη συνεχίζεται την Δευτέρα.

Ανδρούλλα Βασιλείου

Η κα Ανδρούλλα Βασιλείου σπούδασε νομικά στο Middle Temple Inn of Court του Λονδίνου (1961-1964) και διεθνείς σχέσεις στο London Institute of World Affairs (1964-1966).

Εξάσκησε το δικηγορικό επάγγελμα στην Κύπρο για είκοσι χρόνια (1968-1988). Κατά την περίοδο αυτή διετέλεσε νομικός σύμβουλος στην Standard Chartered Bank and αργότερα στην Τράπεζα Κύπρου και υπήρξε μέλος του διοικητικού συμβουλίου δημοσίων και ιδιωτικών εταιριών.

Εγκατέλειψε τη δικηγορία το 1988, όταν ο σύζυγός της εξελέγη Πρόεδρος της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας.

Ως πρώτη κυρία της Κύπρου, ανέπτυξε πολλές δραστηριότητες στον κοινωνικό, τον πολιτιστικό και άλλους τομείς. Συμμετείχε ενεργά επί σειρά ετών στον Σύνδεσμο Ηνωμένων Εθνών Κύπρου και διετέλεσε πρόεδρος του Συνδέσμου επί τέσσερις συνεχείς θητείες. Υπό την ιδιότητά της αυτή, συμμετείχε σε διάφορες διεθνείς και περιφερειακές διασκέψεις στον τομέα των ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων.

Το 1991, εξελέγη πρόεδρος της Παγκόσμιας Ομοσπονδίας Συνδέσμων Ηνωμένων Εθνών και παρέμεινε στη θέση αυτή επί δύο συνεχείς θητείες. Διορίσθηκε από τον Γενικό Γραμματέα του ΟΗΕ Μπούτρος Μπούτρος Γκάλι μέλος της διεθνούς συμβουλευτικής επιτροπής για τη διοργάνωση του εορτασμού της πεντηκοστής επετείου.από την ίδρυση του Οργανισμού.

Όταν έληξε η θητεία της ως Προέδρου της Παγκόσμιας Ομοσπονδίας Συνδέσμων Ηνωμένων Εθνών, εξελέγη ομόφωνα επίτιμη πρόεδρός της.

Το 1996 εξελέγη πρόεδρος της Κυπριακής Ομοσπονδίας Επιχειρηματιών και Επαγγελματιών Γυναικών και παρέμεινε στη θέση αυτή επί δύο συνεχόμενες θητείες.

Το 1996 εξελέγη βουλευτής του Κινήματος Ελευθέρων Δημοκρατών (ΚΕΔ) και το 2001 επανεξελέγη για νέα πενταετή θητεία στο Κυπριακό Κοινοβούλιο.

Την περίοδο κατά την οποία διετέλεσε βουλευτής συμμετείχε στις παρακάτω κοινοβουλευτικές επιτροπές:

Επιτροπή Εξωτερικών Υποθέσεων, Επιτροπή Νομικών Υποθέσεων, Επιτροπή Παιδείας και Πολιτισμού, Επιτροπή Περιβάλλοντος και Ευρωπαϊκών Υποθέσεων. Υπήρξε επίσης μόνιμο μέλος της αντιπροσωπείας της Βουλής στις διασκέψεις της Διακοινοβουλευτικής Ένωσης.

Ως μέλος της Επιτροπής Ευρωπαϊκών Υποθέσεων, συμμετείχε πολύ ενεργά στη διαδικασία εναρμόνισης της κυπριακής νομοθεσίας με το κοινοτικό κεκτημένο.

Την ίδια περίοδο διετέλεσε επίσης μέλος της Μικτής Κοινοβουλευτικής Επιτροπής Κύπρου- ΕΕ.

Υπήρξε αναπληρωματικό μέλος της αντιπροσωπείας της Κυπριακής Βουλής στη Συνέλευση για το Μέλλον της Ευρώπης (2001-2003) και συμμετείχε ενεργά στο σύνολο της διαδικασίας.

Διετέλεσε αντιπρόεδρος της Ομάδας του Ευρωπαϊκού Κόμματος των Φιλελευθέρων Δημοκρατών και Μεταρρυθμιστών (ELDR) (2001-2006) και υπό την ιδιότητά της αυτή υπήρξε και πρόεδρος του Ευρωπαϊκού Δικτύου Φιλελεύθερων Γυναικών.

Το 2002, η κυπριακή κυβέρνηση, σε συνεννόηση με το Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο της Τράπεζας Κύπρου, διόρισε την Ανδρούλλα Βασιλείου πρόεδρο του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου του Ογκολογικού Κέντρου της Τράπεζας Κύπρου, μη κερδοσκοπικού ιδρύματος που παρέχει ευρύ φάσμα θεραπειών για τους καρκινοπαθείς, αξίωμα από το οποίο παραιτήθηκε όταν διορίστηκε Επίτροπος της ΕΕ τον Φεβρουάριο 2008.

Είναι σύζυγός του Γιώργου Βασιλείου, πρώην προέδρου της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας (1988-1993) και κύριου διαπραγματευτή της προσχώρησης της Κύπρου στην ΕΕ. Είναι μητέρα τριών παιδιών.

Εκτός από τη μητρική της γλώσσα, τα ελληνικά, μιλάει άπταιστα αγγλικά και έχει μέτρια γνώση των γαλλικών. Της αρέσει η μουσική, το περπάτημα, το κολύμπι και το διάβασμα.

Profile

Androulla Vassiliou studied Law at Middle Temple Inn of Court, London (1961-1964) and International affairs at the London Institute of World Affairs, (1964-1966).

She practiced Law in Cyprus for twenty years (1968-1988). During this period she acted as Legal Advisor to The Standard Chartered Bank and later, to the Bank of Cyprus. She had also been on the Board of many public and private companies.

She gave up her legal practice in 1988, upon her husband's election to the Presidency of the Republic of Cyprus.

As First Lady she had been very active in social, cultural and other fields. A.V. was for many years actively involved in the work of the United Nations Association of Cyprus and was elected President of the Association for four consecutive terms. As such, she participated in many international and regional conferences especially in the field of Human Rights.

In 1991, she was elected President of the World Federation of United Nations Associations and she was re-elected to this position for two terms. On the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the U.N. she had been appointed member of the select international group for the world wide celebrations of this important anniversary, by the Secretary General Boutros Boutros Ghali.

Upon the expiration of her Presidency of WFUNA she was unanimously elected Honorary President of the Federation.

In 1996 she was elected President of the Cyprus Federation of Business and Professional Women and she was re-elected to this position for two terms.

In the year 1996 she was elected Member of the Cyprus House of Representatives representing the Movement of United Democrats, and in 2001 she was re-elected for a second term of five years.

During her parliamentary years she served on the following committees:

Foreign Affairs Committee, Legal Affairs Committee, Committee on Education and Culture, Committee on Environment and the European Affairs Committee. She was also a Permanent Member of the delegation of the Cyprus Parliament to the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

As a Member of the European Affairs Committee, she participated very actively in the harmonization process of Cyprus with the Aquis Communautaire.

During this period she was also a member of the Joint Parliamentary Committee of Cyprus and the EU.

She was an Alternate Representative of the Cyprus Parliament to the Convention for the Future of Europe (2001-2003) and she participated actively in the whole process.

She has been Vice President of the European Liberal Democrats and Reform Party (ELDR) (2001-2006) and as such she was the chairperson of the European Liberal Women's Network.

In 2002, the Cyprus Government jointly with the Board of Directors of the Bank of Cyprus appointed Androulla Vassiliou Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Cyprus Oncology Centre, a non-profit-making institution offering a wide range of treatment to cancer patients, from which post she resigned upon her nomination as EU Commissioner in February 2008.

Married to Dr. George Vassiliou, former President of the Republic of Cyprus (1988-1993) and Chief Negotiator for Cyprus' accession to the EU She has three children.

In addition to Greek, her mother tongue, she is fluent in English and speaks French, moderately. Her hobbies are: listening to music, walking, swimming and reading.

«Δημιούργησαν» τους πρώτους ανθρώπινους κλώνους

Στην εμφύτευση σε μήτρα των πρώτων 11 κλωνοποιημένων ανθρώπινων εμβρύων προχώρησε ο κυπριακής καταγωγής γενετιστής Δρ Παναγιώτης Ζαβός, όπως ανακοίνωσε χθες. Η εμφύτευσή τους έγινε σε 4 γυναίκες οι οποίες επιθυμούσαν να γίνουν οι πρώτες μητέρες ανθρώπινων κλώνων. Οι παράνομες σε Ευρώπη και ΗΠΑ επεμβάσεις έγιναν στη Μέση Ανατολή.

Σε δηλώσεις του που δημοσιεύεονται στη βρετανική εφημερίδα Independent, ο Δρ. Ζαβός υποστηρίζει πως κατάφερε να δημιουργήσει 14 έμβρυα από κύτταρα του δέρματος των γονέων τους.

Τα 11 από αυτά τα εμφύτευσε στη μήτρα τεσσάρων γυναικών.

Μάλιστα, προηγούμενος, είχε καταγράψει τη διαδικασία της κλωνοποίησης σε βίντεο για να μπορέσει να το αποδείξει το επιστημονικό του «θαύμα». -Δείτε το βίντεο-

Οι εμφυτεύτηκες επεμβάσεις έγιναν μυστικά, σε κάποιο μέρος της Μέσης Ανατολής όπου δεν υπάρχουν νόμοι που να απαγορεύουν την κλωνοποίηση ανθρώπινων εμβρύων, όπως συμβαίνει στη Βρετανία, την Ελλάδα και την Κύπρο και τις ΗΠΑ.

Ο Δρ Παναγιώτης Ζαβός έχει κλινικές υποβοηθούμενης αναπαραγωγής στο Κεντάκι των ΗΠΑ και στην Κύπρο όπου και γεννήθηκε.

Σύμφωνα πάντα με το δημοσίευμα της βρετανικής εφημερίδας, οι υποψήφιοι γονείς κλώνων, είναι τρία παντρεμένα ζευγάρια και μία ελεύθερη γυναίκα και είναι καταγωγής Βρετανικής, από τις ΗΠΑ και από κάποια χώρα της Μέσης Ανατολής που δεν έχει διευκρινιστεί.

Ο ίδιος δήλωσε, χθες, πως κανένα από αυτά τα έμβρυα δεν επιβίωσε, αλλά «γράφω το πρώτο κεφάλαιο στην δημιουργία του πρώτου ανθρώπινου κλωνοποιημένου εμβρύου που προέρχεται από τα δερματικά κύτταρα του γονιού του».

Μήπως να φάμε το βράδυ…κλωνοποιημένο χοιρινό;

Πολλοί από εσάς θα θυμάστε τη Ντόλι, το πρώτο πρόβατο που κλωνοποιήθηκε το 1996. Έκτοτε οι ερευνητές έχουν καταφέρει να κλωνοποιήσουν αγελάδες, γουρούνια, κατσίκες, άλογα, ποντίκια, γάτες και σκύλους. Είναι όμως παραδεκτή από ηθική άποψη η κλωνοποίηση ζώων για εμπορικούς σκοπούς; "Όχι" λένε ομόφωνα τα μέλη της κοινοβουλευτικής επιτροπής Γεωργίας, που θα θέσουν την προσεχή Τρίτη (κατά τη διάρκεια της Συνόδου Ολομέλειας) σχετικά ερωτήματα στην Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή.
Το 1996 αίσθηση προκάλεσε η γέννηση του πρώτου κλωνοποιημένου ζώου -της περίφημης "Ντόλι". Μπορεί να χρησιμοποιηθεί όμως η ανακάλυψη αυτή για εμπορικούς σκοπούς; Ποιός αισθάνεται άνετα με την ιδέα του κρέατος ή του γάλατος από κλωνοποιημένα ζώα; Οι ευρωβουλευτές τουλάχιστον δεν φαίνονται πρόθυμοι να φάνε προϊόντα από κλωνοποιημένα ζώα, αφού τον περασμένο Ιούνιο ζήτησαν την απαγόρευση της κλωνοποίησης ζώων με σκοπό την κατανάλωση...

Μέχρι σήμερα πάντως η κλωνοποίηση δεν αποτελεί εμπορική πρακτική στην Ευρώπη. Με άλλα λόγια, προϊόντα που προέρχονται από κλώνους δεν έχουν εισέλθει στην ευρωπαϊκή αγορά... τουλάχιστον όχι ακόμα! Ωστόσο, η Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή έχει δηλώσει πρόσφατα ότι τα προϊόντα που προέρχονται από κλωνοποιημένα ζώα είναι "στα πρόθυρα εκτενούς εμπορικής χρήσης" και ότι "αναμένονται στην αγορά πριν από το 2010".

Μην ανησυχείτε, το Κοινοβούλιο είναι εδώ!

Έχετε ήδη τρομάξει με την ιδέα να δείτε στο πιάτο σας πχ. κλωνοποιημένο χοιρινό; Μην ανησυχείτε, οι ευρωβουλευτές είναι εδώ για να εγγυηθούν την ασφάλειά σας!

Την επόμενη Τρίτη το θέμα θα συζητηθεί στα πλαίσια της Συνόδου Ολομέλειας που θα πραγματοποιηθεί στις Βρυξέλλες (1-4 Σεπτεμβρίου), όπου μέλη της κοινοβουλευτικής επιτροπής Γεωργίας θα θέσουν στην Επιτροπή τα εξής ερωτήματα:

* Συμφωνεί η Επιτροπή με την άποψη ότι η κλωνοποίηση βλάπτει την καλή διαβίωση των ζώων;
* Μπορεί η Επιτροπή να παράσχει στοιχεία σχετικά με την μακροπρόθεσμη κατάσταση της υγείας και της διαβίωσης κλωνοποιημένων ζώων και των απογόνων τους;
* Θεωρεί η Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή ότι η κλωνοποίηση των ζώων και των απογόνων τους για τον εφοδιασμό σε τρόφιμα δικαιολογείται από ηθική άποψη και με ποιά επιχειρήματα στηρίζει την άποψη αυτή;
* Με ποιό τρόπο η Επιτροπή ενημέρωσε τους καταναλωτές ή προήγαγε τη δημόσια συζήτηση σχετικά με την κλωνοποίηση των ζώων και τις πιθανές συνέπειές της;
* Σχεδιάζει η Επιτροπή να παρουσιάσει συγκεκριμένες προτάσεις ώστε να απαγορευθεί η κλωνοποίηση των ζώων για την παραγωγή τροφίμων, και η εισαγωγή κλωνοποιημένων ζώων, των απογόνων τους, σπέρματος, και προϊόντων από κλωνοποιημένα ζώα ή των απογόνων τους;

Ηθικά διλήμματα (και όχι μόνο) προκαλεί η κλωνοποίηση ζώων

Ο πρόεδρος της κοινοβουλευτικής επιτροπής Γεωργίας Neil Parish (από την Ομάδα του Ευρωπαϊκού Λαϊκού Κόμματος και των Ευρωπαίων Δημοκρατών) τόνισε μια άλλη διάσταση του θέματος: τα κλωνοποιημένα ζώα υποφέρουν. "Τα ζώα αυτά υποφέρουν από πολλές παθήσεις και ζουν γενικά πολύ λιγότερο (σε σχέση με τα μη κλωνοποιημένα ζώα). Από την άποψη της γεωργίας, τίθενται σοβαρά ερωτήματα ως προς την επίδραση της κλωνοποίησης στα γονίδια, κάτι που καθιστά τα κλωνοποιημένα ζώα πιο ευπαθή σε πολλές νόσους" είπε χαρακτηριστικά ο Βρετανός ευρωβουλευτής.

Η Κατερίνα Μπατζελή (μέλος της Σοσιαλιστικής Ομάδας του Ευρωπαϊκού Κοινοβουλίου) τόνισε ότι "τίθενται δεοντολογικά και ηθικά διλήμματα ως προς την κλωνοποίηση των ζώων με σκοπό την κατανάλωση, ιδιαίτερα αν λάβουμε υπόψη μας τη δύναμη της τεχνολογίας και τις πιθανές μελλοντικές απόπειρες κλωνοποίησης ανθρώπων". Η Ελληνίδα ευρωβουλευτής θεωρεί επίσης ότι "η κατανάλωση κρέατος ή γάλατος από κλωνοποιημένα ζώα εγκυμονεί σοβαρούς κινδύνους για την ασφάλεια των τροφίμων και επομένως για την ανθρώπινη υγεία".

Η ευρωβουλευτής Caroline Lucas (από την Ομάδα των Πρασίνων/Ευρωπαϊκής Ελεύθερης Συμμαχίας) πιστεύει από τη μεριά της ότι "η προοπτική της χρήσης κλωνοποιημένων ζώων με σκοπό την κατανάλωση είναι εξαιρετικά ανησυχητική και, ως εκ τούτου θα πρέπει να αναχαιτιστεί". Ας το ελπίσουμε...

ΔΙΑΚΗΡΥΞΗ ΕΥΡΩΠΑΙΚΩΝ ΣΟΣΙΑΛΙΣΤΙΚΩΝ ΚΟΜΜΑΤΩΝ

Εγκρίθηκε η διακήρυξη για τις ευρωεκλογές από το Ευρωπαϊκό Σοσιαλιστικό Κόμμα
Επτά τα βήματα κατά της ύφεσης και της ανεργίας αναφέρει στη διακήρυξη.
Διακήρυξη για τις ευρωεκλογές ενέκρινε, χθες, το Ευρωπαϊκό Σοσιαλιστικό Κόμμα στην Τουλούζ της Γαλλίας, ενώ οι ηγέτες του συμφώνησαν σε μια σειρά από μέτρα που θα προτείνουν για τις πρώτες εκατό ημέρες του νέου Ευρωπαϊκού Κοινοβουλίου. Παράλληλα, ζητείται από το Ευρωπαϊκό Συμβούλιο να πάρει όλα εκείνα τα μέτρα που απαιτούνται ώστε η νέα ηγεσία της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής να εκλεγεί από το Ευρωπαϊκό Κοινοβούλιο.
Στη διακήρυξη, που ενεκρίθη στην Τουλούζ, εκφράζονται φόβοι ότι η μαζική ανεργία στην Ευρώπη μπορεί να αγγίξει τα 27 εκατομμύρια και επισημαίνεται ότι μόνο τα τελευταία δύο χρόνια έχουν χαθεί 10 εκατομμύρια θέσεις εργασίας, με δραματικές κοινωνικές επιπτώσεις για όλους τους Ευρωπαίους πολίτες. Γι' αυτό, τονίζεται ότι η κρίση αποτελεί μια δοκιμασία για την ηγεσία της Ευρώπης, η οποία οφείλει να την αντιμετωπίσει δραστικά, μέσα από μια άμεση αλλαγή πορείας της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης, την οποία μπορούν να διασφαλίσουν οι Σοσιαλιστές.
Στη διακήρυξη περιλαμβάνονται επτά βήματα κατά της ύφεσης και της μαζικής ανεργίας, ώστε να εξασφαλιστεί η κοινωνική ασφάλεια.
Πρώτο, ένα νέο ισχυρό σχέδιο, για την ανάκαμψη της Ευρώπης, με συντονισμένες επενδύσεις σε θέσεις εργασίας και στην πράσινη ανάπτυξη, για να σταματήσει η μαζική ανεργία και η Ευρώπη να οδηγηθεί σε μια νέα πορεία.
Δεύτερο, ένα νέο ευρωπαϊκό σύμφωνο απασχόλησης, που θα διαφυλάσσει την εργασία, θα δημιουργεί νέες θέσεις εργασίας, θα καταπολεμά τη μαζική ανεργία και θα ενισχύει τα δικαιώματα των εργαζομένων, τις συνθήκες εργασίας και την ισότητα των αμοιβών. Προστίθεται ότι πρέπει να διασφαλιστούν τα θεμελιώδη κοινωνικά δικαιώματα, τα οποία, όπως τονίζεται, προηγούνται της ενιαίας αγοράς και των οικονομικών ελευθεριών.
Τρίτο, μια νέα Χάρτα δικαιωμάτων των γυναικών, που θα βελτιώνει τα δικαιώματα και τις ευκαιρίες τους.
Τέταρτο, ένα κοινωνικό σύμφωνο ανάπτυξης, για την αντιμετώπιση των καθολικών κοινωνικών επιπτώσεων της κρίσης, την καταπολέμηση της αύξησης της φτώχειας, της ανισότητας και του αποκλεισμού.
Πέμπτο, αποτελεσματική ρύθμιση της αγοράς, που να καλύπτει όλους τους κλάδους της οικονομίας και των οργάνων της, συμπεριλαμβανομένων των αμοιβαίων κεφαλαίων κινδύνου (hedge funds) και των ιδιωτικών επενδύσεων.
Έκτο, νέα αμοιβαία αλληλεγγύη ανάμεσα στα ευρωπαϊκά κράτη-μέλη -ανάμεσα σε Ανατολή και Δύση, Βορρά και Νότο- που θα διασφαλίζει ένα κοινό οδικό χάρτη εξόδου από την κρίση.
Έβδομο, ένα άμεσο κοινό ευρωπαϊκό οδικό χάρτη για μια παγκόσμια νέα συμφωνία, η οποία θα συμφωνηθεί στη Σύνοδο της Ομάδας των 20 (G20) πριν το τέλος του 2009 και θα αφορά τις συντονισμένες ενέργειες για τη δημιουργία νέων θέσεων εργασίας στον πλανήτη, παγκόσμια ρύθμιση των χρηματοπιστωτικών αγορών, μια παγκόσμια συμφωνία για το κλίμα και βοήθεια στις αναπτυσσόμενες χώρες.
Η διακήρυξη αναφέρεται επίσης στις διεκδικήσεις για μια πενταετή στρατηγική της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης, που θα βασίζονται στο μανιφέστο του Ευρωπαϊκού Σοσιαλιστικού Κόμματος με τίτλο «Πρώτα ο πολίτης: μια νέα κατεύθυνση για την Ευρώπη», οι οποίες θα παρουσιαστούν αμέσως μετά τις ευρωεκλογές και θα τεθούν σε όλους τους υποψηφίους για τη νέα ευρωπαϊκή επιτροπή.
Θέλουμε, τονίζεται, μια νέα προοδευτική Ευρώπη, μια νέα προοδευτική κατεύθυνση για την Ευρώπη.

WASHINGTON, April 26 (Reuters) - The United States declared a public health emergency on Sunday because of an outbreak of swine flu that has been diagnosed in 20 people in this country -- the same strain suspected of killing 81 people in Mexico.

The outbreak is yet another distraction for President Barack Obama as he focuses on rescuing the economy from its worst crisis in decades. His administration will also be mindful of the damage to former President George W. Bush over his government's inept handling of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

"At this point, a top priority is to ensure that communication is robust and that medical surveillance efforts are fully activated," John Brennan, assistant to the president for Homeland Security, told a White House briefing.

Dr Anne Schuchat of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told a separate briefing she feared that some people would die in the United States as the virus spread.

Health and Homeland Security officials announced steps to release some of the U.S. stockpiles of the anti-flu drugs Tamiflu and Relenza. They recommended that local authorities plan for possible school closures and that anyone with symptoms stay at home to reduce the possibility of transmission.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said it was too early to say what impact the outbreak could have on efforts to get the economy back on its feet. Spiraling healthcare costs are already a huge drain on the economy.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said the declaration of the public health emergency was necessary to free federal, state and local agencies' resources and authorize the release of funds to buy more antivirals.

"This is standard operating procedure," Napolitano stressed, adding that similar declarations had been issued in the past to help states cope with flooding or hurricanes.

CASES MILD

The CDC confirmed 20 cases of swine flu in the United States and said all the patients had recovered and only one person had to be hospitalized. Officials said they were not testing air travelers from Mexico for the virus.

The CDC is preparing a "yellow card" for travelers explaining the flu symptoms and what precautions to take, Schuchat said. U.S. health officials are stressing frequent hand washing as the first line of defense against the virus.

Tests so far show that the H1N1 component of the seasonal flu vaccine does not protect against the new H1N1 swine flu strain, Schuchat said. It could take several months to develop a vaccine for the new virus, she added.

The virus in the U.S. cases appeared to be the same strain as the one that has killed scores in Mexico, CDC acting Director Dr Richard Besser said, although it was not yet clear why it had not proven as deadly in the United States. Health officials from the United States and Canada were now in Mexico to try to answer this "critical question," he said.

"We expect to see more cases of swine flu. As we continue to look for cases, we expect that we will find them," Besser said.

Napolitano said the United States would release 25 percent of the 50 million anti-flu drugs from the strategic national stockpile. The Department of Defense has also bought 7 million courses of Tamiflu for defense personnel, she said.

Tamiflu, a pill made by Roche AG ROG.X and Gilead Sciences Inc (GILD.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), and GlaxoSmithKline's (GSK.L: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) (GSK.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) and Biota's (BTA.AX: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) Relenza, an inhaled drug, can treat influenza if given quickly. They have been shown to work against this new flu strain.

Swine flu cases raise more questions than answers

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - How widespread is this new swine flu that has killed as many as 81 people in Mexico? How can a swine flu be infecting people? Why has it killed some people and caused only mild symptoms in others?

The new strain of H1N1 influenza is behaving just as public health experts expect it to -- that is, unpredictably.

"It's very hard to predict exactly," Dr. Anne Schuchat of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told reporters in a conference call. "We all need to all be prepared for change."

Within hours on Sunday, officials learned of new cases across the United States and in Canada, for a total of 26, in addition to more than 1,300 suspected cases in Mexico.

Influenza can spread quietly, and people who are infected can spread the virus before they even start showing symptoms. One of the biggest problems with flu is that it causes flu-like symptoms -- just like dozens of other viruses and bacteria do.

Fever, headache, muscle aches, dry cough, extreme tiredness -- all these can be caused by numerous other infections from the rhinoviruses that cause the common cold to the less-known but also common adenoviruses.

"The syndrome that we are hearing about in Mexico is relatively non-specific," Schuchat noted. "There are many different causes of respiratory illnesses."

And people die of these common infections every day. Even during the height of the flu season, only 10 percent or less of deaths from "influenza-like illness" are ever confirmed to be influenza.

So tracking it is difficult.

Health officials all over the world are now testing people with influenza-like symptoms for the new strain of swine flu. It requires DNA tests because it is an influenza A virus -- like two of the strains now causing very common seasonal flu. It is also an H1N1 virus -- one of the seasonal strains.

DNA TESTING

Not until the DNA is sequenced does it become clear whether a person with influenza has this new and unusual strain of swine flu.

"It could be all over the place and they just haven't tested for it," said Mike Osterholm, a former Minnesota state health official who is now director of the Minnesota-based Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy.

It already has turned up in Mexico, Canada and the United States, and among people who have nothing else apparent in common. That suggests the connection is an as-yet unseen chain of human infections.

"It is clear that this is widespread. And that is why we have let you know that we cannot contain the spread of this virus," Schuchat said.

This new strain is just what flu experts have worried about. It has DNA from four different strains of flu. While genetically it most closely resembles a swine H1N1 virus, it contains avian flu and human flu sequences as well.

While most cases in the United States, Canada and Mexico have been mild, it has killed up to 81 people in Mexico, including some young adults. This is disturbing because flu usually kills the very young, the very old and those with other underlying conditions.

"It may look different because we don't have good enough information. It may look different because the virus is different," Schuchat said.

Acting CDC director Richard Besser said this virus could itself disappear and reappear. "It's very hard to say," he told a White House briefing on Sunday. "We are nearing the end of the season in which flu viruses tend to transmit easily."

Besser said he would expect the number of cases to decline in the northern hemisphere's summer. Other pandemics have come in waves months apart and Besser said this virus could do that.

Pandemics hit in 1918 -- killing anywhere between 40 million and 100 million people globally -- and in 1957 and 1968. The 1968 pandemic was relatively mild, with 1 million deaths -- perhaps because the case, an H3N2 virus, was similar to the H3N2 that caused the 1957 pandemic and people had some immunity.

H1N1 has been around since the 1918 pandemic, in various forms but no one knows if this strain is different enough to cause widespread and severe disease. Health experts say the world is overdue for another pandemic but have stressed that no one can predict which strain would cause the next one.

Mexico’s Calderon Declares Emergency Amid Swine Flu Outbreak

April 25 (Bloomberg) -- Mexican President Felipe Calderon declared an emergency in his country’s swine flu outbreak, giving him powers to order quarantines and suspend public events.

Authorities have canceled school at all levels in Mexico City and the state of Mexico until further notice, and the government has shut most public and government activities in the area. The emergency decree, published today in the state gazette, gives the president authority to take more action.

“The federal government under my charge will not hesitate a moment to take all, all the measures necessary to respond with efficiency and opportunity to this respiratory epidemic,” Calderon said today during a speech to inaugurate a hospital in the southern state of Oaxaca.

At least 20 deaths in Mexico from the disease are confirmed, Health Minister Jose Cordova said yesterday. The strain is a variant of H1N1 swine influenza that has also sickened at least eight people in California and Texas. As many as 68 deaths may be attributed to the virus in Mexico, and about 1,000 people in the Mexico City area are showing symptoms of the illness, Cordoba said.

Obama’s Visit

The first case was seen in Mexico on April 13. The outbreak coincided with the President Barack Obama’s trip to Mexico City on April 16. Obama was received at Mexico’s anthropology museum in Mexico City by Felipe Solis, a distinguished archeologist who died the following day from symptoms similar to flu, Reforma newspaper reported. The newspaper didn’t confirm if Solis had swine flu or not.

The Mexican government is distributing breathing masks to curtail the disease’s spread. There is no vaccine against the new strain of swine flu, health authorities said.

Museums, theaters and other venues in the Mexico City area, where large crowds gather, have shut down voluntarily and concerts and other events canceled to help contain the disease. Two professional soccer games will be played tomorrow in different Mexico City stadiums without any fans, El Universal newspaper reported. Catholic masses will be held, the newspaper said, although church officials urged worshipers to wear breath masks and to avoid contact.

Schools will likely remain closed next week, Calderon said in the Oaxaca speech. The decree allows Calderon to regulate transportation, enter any home or building for inspection, order quarantines and assign any task to all federal, state and local authorities as well as health professionals to combat the disease.

“The health of Mexicans is a cause that we’re defending with unity and responsibility,” Calderon said. “I know that although it’s a grave problem, a serious problem, we’re going to overcome it.”

Normal Airport Operations

Mexico City’s international airport, which handles about 70,000 passengers each day, is operating normally, said Victor Mejia, a spokesman. Passengers are given a questionnaire asking if they have flu symptoms and recommending they cancel their trip and see a doctor if they do. The measures are voluntary, Mejia said, and no case of swine flu in airport passengers, workers or visitors has been confirmed.

Authorities throughout Central America have issued alerts to prevent the outbreak from spreading. Guatemala ordered tighter control yesterday of its northern border with Mexico, according to EFE. Gerberth Morales, who’s heading the Guatemala government’s response, said no cases of swine flu have been reported in his country, the Spanish news agency reported.

Brazil is intensifying vigilance in ports, airports and borders to check travelers’ health, luggage, aircrafts and ships in a preventive action against the outbreak in Mexico, the Agency for Sanitary Vigilance said on its Web site.

Ist Obama immun gegen Schweinegrippe?

Der erste Fall von Schweinegrippe wurde am 13. April in Mexiko entdeckt. Dieser Ausbruch der Infektion fand kurz vor dem Staatsbesuch von Barack Obama in Mexiko City am 16. April statt.

Interessant ist, dass Obama während seines Aufenthalts das Anthropologische Museum besuchte und dort vom bekannten Archäologen Felipe Solis empfangen wurde, der am nächsten Tag an den Symptomen einer Grippe starb, wie die Zeitung Reforma berichtet. Eigentlich müsste sich Obama mit dem tödlichen Virus durch den Kontakt mit Solis angesteckt haben, aber so wie es aussieht ist er gesund und munter. Wurde Obama rechtszeitig vor dem hochansteckenden Virus geimpft? Und wenn ja, wusste man eine Epidemie mit Schweinegrippe würde ausbrechen?

Der Virus wird von den mexikanischen Behörden als so infektiös eingestuft, dass sie den Notstand ausgerufen haben und Schutzmasken an die Bevölkerung verteilen, um die Verbreitung einzudämmen. Museen, Theater und andere öffentliche Veranstaltungsorte wo sich grosse Menschenmengen treffen wurden in Mexiko City geschlossen. Auch die Fussballspiele werden ohne Zuschauer stattfinden. Die katholischen Messen in den Kirchen werden weiter abgehalten, aber die Bevölkerung ist aufgefordert worden Masken zu tragen und den Kontakt untereinander zu vermeiden.

Die US-Behörden haben am Samstag davor gewarnt, dass der neue Schweinegrippeerreger nicht unter Kontrolle zu bringen sei. Angesichts zahlreicher Infektionsherde „in vielen verschiedenen Gemeinden“ der USA sei nicht davon auszugehen, dass eine Eindämmung derzeit möglich sei.

“Wir sind nicht soweit, dass wir den Virus auf einen Ort begrenzen können“, sagte eine Mitarbeiterin des US-Zentrums für Krankheitsüberwachung und Vorbeugung (CDC) in Washington. Sie rechnen daher mit weiteren Fällen. Die 500'000 Plastiksärge die in Madison Georgia nicht weit vom Hauptquartier der CDC in Atlanta auf Halde liegen zeigen, da rechnet jemand mit vielen Todesfällen, und Särge aus Plastik machen nur Sinn wegen Seucheneindämmung.

„Es scheint, dass diese Krankheit nicht nur vom Tier auf den Menschen, sondern von Mensch auf Mensch übertragbar ist und somit das Potenzial für eine Pandemie beinhaltet“, sagte der Direktor des Schweizer Bundesamt für Gesundheit (BAG) Thomas Zeltner.

Patrick Mathys von der Sektion Früherkennung und Epidemiologie des BAG sagte, inwiefern die saisonale Grippeimpfung gegen das Schweinegrippe-Virus wirke, könne noch nicht gesagt werden. Erkrankungen könnten aber mit Tamiflu behandelt werden. Für ein Viertel der Schweizer Bevölkerung stehe dieses Medikament für den Ernstfall bereit.

Die Schweiz ist auf eine Pandemie vorbereitet

Wie mir ein Insider aus dem Katastrophenschutz berichtet, haben sich die Schweizer Behörden, die Spitäler und Ärzte und die Notfallorganisationen auf eine Pandemie schon seit Jahren vorbereitet. Im letzten Jahr wurden alle Ärzte und Nothelfer nochmals mit einem Ausbildungsprogramm auf den neusten Stand gebracht, weil man mit einer unmittelbar bevorstehen Pandemie rechnet. Dabei kann man sich fragen, warum wissen sie, es kommt eine Pandemie auf uns zu? Ist das geplant?

Mein Informant hat mir folgende Szenarien geschildert, von denen die Gesundheits- und Sicherheitsbehörden bei einer Pandemie ausgehen:

- Im schlimmsten Fall wird mit dem Ausfall der Hälfte der Bevölkerung gerechnet. DIE HÄLFTE! Nicht unbedingt durch sofortige Todesfälle, sondern in dem die Menschen wochenlang mit den Symptomen krank im Bett liegen.

- Bedingt dadurch, werden die Hälfte des Personals in allen wichtigen Bereichen nicht zur Arbeit erscheinen. Dadurch wird es Probleme bei allen Versorgungs- und Sicherheitseinrichtungen geben. Es muss mit Ausfällen bei der Wasser-, Strom- und Lebensmittelversorgung gerechnet werden und auch bei den Sicherheitsbehörden, weil schlichtweg das Personal fehlt die zum Dienst erscheint.

- Dadurch muss mit Stromausfällen, Wasserknappheit, Lebensmittelengpässen und generell mit einem Chaos gerechnet werden, weil die Polizei, Feuerwehr und andere Sicherheits- und Notdienst einfach nicht kommen können, sie haben kein Personal.

- Um eine Revolte zu verhindern und auch um die Verbreitung der Epidemie einzudämmen wird das Notrecht, bzw. das Kriegsrecht ausgerufen, mit kompletter Ausgangssperre. Niemand darf sich mehr aus seiner Wohnung mehr begeben, ausser berechtigte Personen. Das Militär wird alle sicherheitsrelevanten Einrichtungen schützen und die Ausgangssperre mit Strassenpatroullien überwachen.

- Die Polizei, das Militär und das Nothilfepersonal, Sanitäter, Ärzte und Krankenpfleger sowie ihre Familien werden sofort mit Tamiflu geimpft, obwohl man gar nicht weis ob es überhaupt hilft, aber mehr steht nicht an Gegenmittel zur Verfügung. Deshalb ist auch ein Vorrat für ein Viertel der Schweizer Bevölkerung angelegt worden, was aber tatsächlich nur für das Sicherheitspersonal gedacht ist.

- Strassensperren werden errichtet um jeden Verkehr und damit Verbreitung der Krankheit zu verhindern. Nur Fahrzeuge mit speziellen grossen Aufklebern und Genehmigung dürfen passieren, wie zum Beispiel Ärzte oder das Pflegepersonal, welches die Patienten zu Hause besucht.

- Wenn sich diese Ausgangssperre über Wochen oder sogar Monate hinzieht, wird mit Aufständen und Plünderungen wegen Hunger gerechnet. Notfalls wird von der Schusswaffe durch die Polizei und Militär gebrauch gemacht.

- Es wird aber generell von einer sehr hohen Anzahl an Todesfällen ausgegangen. Nicht nur bei den Alten und Schwachen, sondern auch bei der jungen Bevölkerung. Bis zu 50 Prozent könnten durch den Virus sterben oder durch die Begleiterscheinungen, wie Hunger, Wassermangel, Mangel an Betreuung und medizinischer Versorgung der Kranken, Ausfall von Geräten durch Stromunterbruch usw. ... davon wird ausgegangen.

- Deshalb haben die kantonalen Gesundheitsbehörden entsprechend hohe Bestände an Leichensäcken auf Lager und mit den Krematorien entsprechende Kapazitäten vereinbart und vorbereitet, um die Leichen zu „entsorgen“. Aber es sind auch andere Massnahmen geplant, wie Massenverbrennungen.

- Diese Notsituation kann bis zu 6 Monate andauern.

Wie ich in meinem Artikel "Vorsorgeplanung für Krisenbewältigung verabschiedet" hat der ehemalige Verteidigungsminister und Bundesrat Samuel Schmid bei seiner Abschiedskonferenz eine Vorsorgeplanung für Krisenszenarien verabschiedet. Einer der fünf Szenarien ist "eine weltweite Grippe-Pandemie".

Als Fazit aus diesem Notfallszenario kann man nur jedem empfehlen sich Schutzmasken und Gummihandschuhe zu kaufen und für sechs Monate eine Notvorrat anzulegen.

Sie wollen eine Bevölkerungsreduktion

Wir können aus der Vergangenheit lernen und uns anschauen was nach dem I. Weltkrieg passierte. Die Spanische Grippe war eine weltweite Pandemie, die zwischen 1918 und 1920 durch einen ungewöhnlich virulenten Abkömmling des Influenzavirus verursacht wurde und mindestens 25 Millionen Todesopfer forderte. In einer Bilanz in der Fachzeitschrift Bulletin of the History of Medicine vom Frühjahr 2002 kamen die Autoren sogar auf knapp 50 Millionen Todesopfer, mehr als der Krieg selber an Tote verursachte.

Der effektivste Weg ein Massensterben auszulösen ist durch eine Pandemie, und man kann es auch noch auf die „Natur“ schieben, geniale Ausrede für Massenmord. Kriege sind viel zu ineffektiv, zu teuer und auch zu langsam. Ausserdem wird dabei vieles zerstört und verseucht was man erhalten will.

Die Frage die im Raum steht, ist eine Pandemie mit einem „Killervirus“ einfach nur Zufall oder handelt es sich um eine geplante Aktion zur Bevölkerungsreduktion und stammt der Virus aus einem Militärlabor? Für letzters spricht vieles, denn alle Vertreter der Neuen Weltordnung welche die Weltdiktatur umsetzen sprechen schon lange von einer Übervölkerung unseres Planeten und der Notwendigkeit einer drastischen Reduzierung der Menschheit. Siehe meinen Artikel "Das Stonehenge der Neuen Weltordnung", auf dem unter Anderem das Gebot steht "Halte die Menschheit unter 500'000'000 in ewigem Gleichgewicht mit der Natur".

Oder die Aussage von Prinz Philip, der Ehemann der Queen der auf die Frage, was er denn bei einer Wiedergeburt sein möchte antwortete: „Ich würde als tödlicher Virus auf die Erde zurückkommen und das Überbevölkerungsproblem dann lösen.“ Siehe meinen Artikel "Kinder sind schlecht für die Erde."

Es ist ganz klar, die globale Elite will weniger Menschen auf "ihrem" Planeten und die Umweltschützer sind als nützliche Idioten ein Bestandteil dieses Plans die Menschen auszurotten und die Welt in einen Naturpark zu verwandeln. Es benötigt dann nur noch 500 Millionen Sklaven welche die Elite bedienen und den Rasen mähen.

Der Mensch ist durch Umweltschutzpropaganda und der CO2-Lüge als grösstes Übel hingestellt worden, der dezimiert werden muss, und die Leute glauben es auch noch und haben einen Schuldkomplex.

Haben wir doch alles schon in der NS-Zeit gehabt, unnützes Ungeziefer muss ausgerottet werden. Die Nazis waren ja mit ihrer SS-Ideologie der Naturnähe die ersten Grünen, das will nur keiner wahrhaben und es wird geleugnet. Genau wie die Nazis auch die extremen Antiraucher und Gesundheitsfanatiker wahren, was jetzt überall durchgesetzt wird. Siehe meinen Artikel „Die Antiraucherkampagne wurde von den Nazis erfunden“.

Was die meisten Gutmenschen nicht erkennen, die NWO ist der Weltfaschismus, die Weltdiktatur und das faschistische Programm wird komplett umgesetzt, nur anders, sehr clever, modern und mit plausiblen Argumenten belegt und mit politischer Korrektheit verteidigt. Wir leben in einer verkehrten Welt, wo die welche vor dem Weltfaschismus warnen als Nationalisten oder sogar Rechtsextreme verleumdet werden, dabei sind die welche sich als liberal, global und offen geben, die denen die Medien, das Geld, die Politiker und die Macht gehören, die Kriege anzetteln und Massentötungen verursachen, das sind die wirklichen Faschisten, die es aber schaffen sich hinter einem „Schutzschild“ zu verstecken ... und die meisten Menschen fallen auf diese Täuschung rein und sind so blöd und verteidigen ihre eigene Versklavung auch noch.

Stammt der tödliche Virus aus einem Labor?

Bereits im März habe ich zwei Artikel über die absichtliche Kontaminierung von Impfstoffen berichtet: „Grippeimpfung durch Killervirus verseucht“ und „Wie BAYER wissentlich AIDS-verseuchte Präparate verkaufte“. Es handelt sich dabei um einen eindeutigen und bewussten Versuch durch Impfungen eine Epidemie auszulösen. Was für ein Psychophat muss man sein, um so eine Massentötung versteckt hinter einem „Heilmittel“ zu verursachen?

Aber das ist nichts neues. Im März 2008 hat die indonesische Gesundheitsministerin Dr. Siti Fadilah Supari die USA und die Weltgesundheitsorganisation WHO beschuldigt, sie sind Teil einer Verschwörung um von der Verbreitung der Vogelgrippe zu profitieren, und dass die USA Proben des Virus zur Herstellung einer Biowaffe verwendet. Dann hat die indonesische Regierung sich mit der US Navy angelegt und eine diplomatische Missstimmung mit Amerika ausgelöst, weil dessen Forschungslabor NAMRU in Jakarta angeblich biologische Waffen aus Vogelgrippeproben die im Land gesammelt wurden herstellt. Islamische Führer trafen sich mit der Gesundheitsministerin Siti Fadillah Supari und waren sich einig, das Labor stellt keinen Nutzen für Indonesien dar. Der Verteidigungsminister Juwono Sudarsono hat die NAMRU-Einrichtung kritisiert und eine Aufsicht über dessen Tätigkeit verlangt. Siehe Artikel der australischen The Age.

Die Schweinegrippe stamm nicht aus der Natur. Der Virus beinhaltet genetisches Material welches von Schweinen, Vögeln und Menschen stammt, was Wissenschaftler noch nie vorher gesehen haben. „Wir sind sehr, sehr besorgt“, sagt der Sprecher der Weltgesundheitsorganisation WHO Thomas Abraham. „Wir haben hier einen neuen Virus und er verbreitet sich von Mensch zu Mensch“, sagte er. „Die ganze Mannschaft ist jetzt an Deck.“

Es kann nur aus einem militärischen Labor stammen und wurde bewusst als Waffe hergestellt. Entweder gelangte es absichtlich oder durch einen Unfall in die Umwelt und dann auf den Menschen. Die ersten Fälle in den USA zeigen, die Kranken hatten vorher nie Kontakt zu Schweinen, sind deshalb nicht von den Tieren angesteckt worden.

Ratet mal wo der erste Ausbruch von Schweinegrippe stattfand? Ja genau, in Fort Dix New Jersey im Jahre 1976. Was ist das besondere an dieser militärischen Anlage? Es ist das grösste Bundesgefängnis der Vereinigten Staaten innerhalb des Militärgebiets. Was eignet sich besser zur Probe von Biowaffen als Gefangene die sich als „freiwillige“ Versuchskaninchen, oder sollte ich besser sagen, als Laborratten hergeben. Dreizehn Soldaten starben damals durch eine Zwangsimpfung, aber nicht an der Grippe sondern an dem Impfstoff.

Aber es geht nicht nur um Bevölkerungsreduktion und die Schaffung einer Biowaffe, Geldgier spielt auch eine Rolle. Die üblichen Verdächtigen haben ihre Drecksfinger überall drin. So war der ehemalige Verteidigungsminister Donald Rumsfeld an der Firma Gilead Sciences als Aktionär beteiligt, eine kalifornische Biotech Firma, welche die Rechte an ... ja ihr habt es erraten ... TAMIFLU besitzt. Deshalb heisst das Zeug auch unter Insidern RUMIFLU.

Rumsfeld oder Rumi wie er auch gennat wird war sogar Verwaltungsratsvorsitzender von 1997 bis er zur Bush-Regierung 2001 ging und ihm gehören immer noch Aktienanteile im Wert von $5 bis $25 Millionen, laut eigener Veröffentlichung seiner finanziellen Verhältnisse. Je mehr Panik über die Vogel- und jetzt Schweinegrippe verbreitet wird, je mehr auch tatsächlich daran erkranken, je mehr profitieren die Weltverbrecher auch noch finanziell. Der gleiche Oberkriminelle steckt auch noch hinter der Zulassung von einem anderen Gift, Aspartam, welches in jedem Süssgetränk und als Zuckerersatz verwendet wird, aber schlimme Nebenwirkungen hat. Aspartam das süsse Gift.

Zum Schluss kann man sich noch fragen, von was will man uns durch diese Medien füllende Panik über die Schweinegrippe ablenken? Mit was können wir das dumme Volk beschäftigen, damit sie nicht die wirklichen Probleme erkennen und wütent werden? Da haben wir selbstverständlich die weltweite Finanzkrise, Massenarbeitslosigkeit und Firmenpleiten ... und in Amerika die Veröffentlichung der CIA-Foltermemos, die zeigen, dass die Folter von Gefangenen durch die höchsten Instanzen der Bush-Regierung genehmigt und befohlen wurden. Davon muss abgelenkt werden.

Für was so ein Virus alles gut ist.

Die Frage ob Obama immun gegen Schweinegrippe ist und ob er dagegen aus Vorwissen geimpft wurde habe ich damit nicht beantwortet. Aber wie damals vor dem grossen Ereignis des 11. September 2001, haben sich Bush und Cheney vier Wochen vor der Attacke mit den Anthrax-Briefen auch gegen die tödlichen Milzbrandsporen mit dem Gegenmittel Cipro impfen lassen. Nur böse Zungen würden behaupten, sie haben gewusst 9/11 würde passieren oder sind massgeblich am Massenmord beteiligt, und haben sich deshalb geschützt. "Die Anthrax Attacke beweist, 9/11 haben sie selbst gemacht".

The company that released contaminated flu virus material from a plant in Austria confirmed Friday that the experimental product contained live H5N1 avian flu viruses.

And an official of the World Health Organization’s European operation said the body is closely monitoring the investigation into the events that took place at Baxter International’s research facility in Orth-Donau, Austria.

“At this juncture we are confident in saying that public health and occupational risk is minimal at present,” medical officer Roberta Andraghetti said from Copenhagen, Denmark.

“But what remains unanswered are the circumstances surrounding the incident in the Baxter facility in Orth-Donau.”

The contaminated product, a mix of H3N2 seasonal flu viruses and unlabelled H5N1 viruses, was supplied to an Austrian research company. The Austrian firm, Avir Green Hills Biotechnology, then sent portions of it to sub-contractors in the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Germany.

The contamination incident, which is being investigated by the four European countries, came to light when the subcontractor in the Czech Republic inoculated ferrets with the product and they died. Ferrets shouldn’t die from exposure to human H3N2 flu viruses.

Public health authorities concerned about what has been described as a “serious error” on Baxter’s part have assumed the death of the ferrets meant the H5N1 virus in the product was live. But the company, Baxter International Inc., has been parsimonious about the amount of information it has released about the event.

On Friday, the company’s director of global bioscience communications confirmed what scientists have suspected.

“It was live,” Christopher Bona said in an email.

The contaminated product, which Baxter calls “experimental virus material,” was made at the Orth-Donau research facility. Baxter makes its flu vaccine — including a human H5N1 vaccine for which a licence is expected shortly — at a facility in the Czech Republic.

People familiar with biosecurity rules are dismayed by evidence that human H3N2 and avian H5N1 viruses somehow co-mingled in the Orth-Donau facility. That is a dangerous practice that should not be allowed to happen, a number of experts insisted.

Accidental release of a mixture of live H5N1 and H3N2 viruses could have resulted in dire consequences.

While H5N1 doesn’t easily infect people, H3N2 viruses do. If someone exposed to a mixture of the two had been simultaneously infected with both strains, he or she could have served as an incubator for a hybrid virus able to transmit easily to and among people.

That mixing process, called reassortment, is one of two ways pandemic viruses are created.

There is no suggestion that happened because of this accident, however.

“We have no evidence of any reassortment, that any reassortment may have occurred,” said Andraghetti.

“And we have no evidence of any increased transmissibility of the viruses that were involved in the experiment with the ferrets in the Czech Republic.”

Baxter hasn’t shed much light — at least not publicly — on how the accident happened. Earlier this week Bona called the mistake the result of a combination of “just the process itself, (and) technical and human error in this procedure.”

He said he couldn’t reveal more information because it would give away proprietary information about Baxter’s production process.

Andraghetti said Friday the four investigating governments are co-operating closely with the WHO and the European Centre for Disease Control in Stockholm, Sweden.

“We are in very close contact with Austrian authorities to understand what the circumstances of the incident in their laboratory were,” she said.

“And the reason for us wishing to know what has happened is to prevent similar events in the future and to share lessons that can be learned from this event with others to prevent similar events. ... This is very important.”

Grippeimpfung durch Killervirus verseucht

Der effektivste Weg eine tödliche Pandemie auszulösen, ist den Killervirus in eine „harmlose“ Impfung einzuschleusen. Ist das jetzt passiert?

Wie die Toronto Sun berichtet, hat die Firma welche den verseuchten Grippeimpfstoff aus einem Labor in Österreich ausgelieferte bestätigt, dass dieser H5N1 Vogelgrippeviren enthalten hat.

Der tödliche Impfstoff wurde in den Anlagen der Firma Baxter in Orth an der Donau hergestellt. Er enthielt ein Mischung aus dem aktuellen H3N2 Grippevirus und den tödlichen H5N1 Viren und wurde an die Firma Avir Green Hills Biotechnologie geschickt, welche dann das Material weiter nach Tschechien, Slowenien und Deutschland lieferte.

Die Verseuchung, welche von den vier Ländern untersucht wird, kam zu Tage, als der Empfänger in Tschechien damit Frettchen impfte, die alle starben. Normalerweise dürfen aber diese Tiere nicht an menschlichen Grippeviren sterben, deshalb war etwas an dem Impfstoff faul und der Alarm wurde ausgelöst.

Eine Sprecherin des europäischen Ablegers der Weltgesundheitsorganisation sagte, sie würden die Untersuchung was in den Forschungslabors von Baxter in Orth in Österreich passierte genau verfolgen.

„Zu diesem Zeitpunkt sind wir zuversichtlich, dass das öffentliche Gesundheitsrisiko minimal ist“, sagte Roberta Andraghetti in Kopenhagen.

„Was unbeantwortet ist, sind die Umstände wie es in der Baxter-Anlage dazu kam.“

Gesundheitsbehörden sind über diesen „ernsten Fehler“ seitens Baxter sehr besorgt. Der Tod der Frettchen zeigt, der tödliche H5N1 Virus war lebendig. Bisher hat die Firma Baxter sich nicht gross darüber geäussert.

Am letzten Freitag hat der Direktor zuständig für die Information über die globale Biowissenschaft bei Baxter International Inc. Christopher Bona in einer E-Mail bestätigt, was Experten bereits vermutet haben, „Es war lebendig“.

Das verseuchte Produkt, welches Baxter ein "experimentales Virusmaterial" nennt, wurde in den Forschungslabors von Baxter in Orth an der Donau produziert. Baxter erstellt seine Grippeimpfstoffe, einschliesslich menschliche H5N1 Impfstoffe, für die eine baldige Lizenz erwartet mit, in seinen Anlage in Bohumil Tschechien.

Leute die sich mit den Sicherheitsrichtlinien im Biopharmabereich auskennen sind konsterniert, wie überhaupt ein menschlicher H3N2 und ein Avian H5N Virus sich irgendwie in den Labors in Orth vermischen konnte. Das ist eine sehr gefährliche Situation, die niemals passieren dürfte, sagen die Experten.

Wäre dieser Impfstoff in die Öffentlichkeit gelangt, wären die Konsequenzen katastrophal gewesen.

Da H5N1 relativ schwer sich verbreitet, aber mit dem H3N2 Grippevirus man sich leicht ansteckt, ist die Mixtur der beiden der beste Weg wie man die Vogelgrippe unter die Leute bringt. Die damit geimpften Personen würden als Inkubator für einen Hybridvirus dienen, der dann sehr ansteckend wäre.

„Wir haben keine Beweise einer bewussten Vermischung“ sagte Andraghetti.

„Und wir haben keinen Beweis für eine verstärkte Ansteckung des Virus welche an den Frettchen in Tschechien angewendet wurde.“

Die Firma Baxter hat nicht viel Licht ins Dunkle gebracht, jedenfalls nicht öffentlich, wie der „Unfall“ passiert sein könnte. Bona nannte den Fehler „ein Resultat aus einer Kombination des Herstellungsprozesses selber und technisches und menschliches Versagen.“

Er sagte, er könne nicht mehr dazu sagen, weil damit Firmeninternes über den Produktionsprozess bekannt wird.

Andraghetti sagte am Freitag, die Behörden der vier involvierten Staaten kooperieren eng mit der WHO und dem European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), die EU-Agentur im Kampf gegen Epidemien in Stockholm.

„Wir sind in engen Kontakt mit den österreichischen Behörden um zu verstehn, wie die Umstände des Ereignisses in den Labors waren“, sagte sie.

„Und der Grund dafür ist, weil wir ähnliche Vorfälle in der Zukunft verhindern wollen und um daraus zu lernen, um das Wissen mit anderen zu teilen, damit so was nicht wieder passiert ... das ist sehr wichtig.“


Kommentar: Man stelle sich vor, mit dem Präparat wäre eine Grippeimpfung an Menschen durchgeführt worden, so wie sie von den Behörden und der Ärzteschaft laufend empfohlen wird. Alle Empfänger wären dann mit der tödlichen Vogelgrippe angesteckt gewesen und damit wäre ein Pandemie ausgelöst worden. Ein Katastrophenszenario. Die Todesrate im Krankheitsfall liegt bei über 60 Prozent. Eine "ideale" Biowaffe.

Aber genau so muss man es machen, wenn man absichtlich eine Massenepidemie einer tödlichen Krankheit auslösen will. Eine zufällige Vermischung von zwei Virentypen ist in einem Hightech-Labor mit den heutigen Sicherheitsstandards gar nicht möglich, ausser es wird bewusst gemacht. Ist hier eine Operation zur Auslösung einer Pandemie aufgeflogen? Haben uns die Frettchen gerettet?

Es stehen nur zwei Möglichkeiten zur Auswahl. Es ist ein Unfall, dann sind die Zustände in den Baxter-Labors gemeingefährlich für die Menscheit. Die verantwortlichen Personen müssen streng bestraft werden. Oder wurde es mit Absicht gemacht?

Mutmassliches Motiv? Entweder Profitgier, weil dann ein Sturm auf das Gegenmittel stattfindet, oder es steckt eine absichtliche Bevölkerungsreduktion dahinter, durch eine bestimmte Gruppe die das im Programm hat.

EMEA erteilt Zulassungsempfehlung für neuen Impfstoff gegen die Vogel-grippe-Pandemie Innovative Technologie beschleunigt Impfstoff-Bereitstellung im Ernstfall Wien, 07. Jänner 2009 – Das Unternehmen Baxter hat vom Ausschuss für Humanarzneimittel CHMP (Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use) der euopäischen Zulassungsbehörde EMEA (European Medicines Agency) eine Empfehlung für die Zulassung von CELVAPAN in der Europäischen Union (EU) erhalten; die Impfung ist der erste, pandemische H5N1 (“Vogelgrippe”)-Impfstoff in Europa, der auf Zellkultur basiert. Diese Beurteilung der EMEA geht dem Lizensierungsverfahren dieses so ge-nannten „Prototypen“-Impfstoffs („Mock-up“-Impfstoff) voraus, das die Bedin-gung für einen Einsatz von CELVAPAN darstellt, falls die Weltgesundheitsor-ganisation (WHO) offiziell eine Pandemie ausruft. Die positive Beurteilung stützte sich auf die Ergebnisse eines umfangreichen klinischen Forschungs- und Entwicklungs-Programms inklusive einer klinischen Phase III-Studie. Diese er-brachte den Nachweis, dass CELVAPAN sicher und gut verträglich ist und bei zwei unterschiedlichen H5N1-Virusstämmen eine gute Immunantwort hervorruft. „Diese positive Beurteilung der EMEA zu CELVAPAN ist ein weiterer Schritt zu unserem Ziel, die Bevölkerung mit einem sicheren und wirksamen Impfstoff zu versorgen und vor einer möglichen Influenza-Pandemie zu schützen", sagt Dr. Hartmut Ehrlich, Vice President Global Research and Development Baxter BioScience. Schnelligkeit kann im Pandemiefall lebensrettend sein Ein sogenannter „Mock-up“-Impfstoff ist mit dem zukünftigen Impfstoff gegen eine Pandemie identisch, was Zusammensetzung und Herstellung betrifft. Da der tatsächliche Pandemie-auslösende Virusstamm jedoch nicht bekannt ist, enthält der Impfstoff einen anderen Influenzastamm, dem die allgemeine Bevölkerung bisher nicht ausgesetzt war. Kommt es zur Pandemie, dann erlaubt das Lizenzverfahren, den Impfstoff mit dem tatsächlichen, dann für die Pandemie verantwortlichen Stamm, in einem beschleunigten Verfahren zuzulassen. CELVAPAN wird mittels innovativer, von Baxter im Biomedizinischen For-schungszentrum in Orth/Donau entwickelter Vero-Cell-Technologie hergestellt. Das Vero-Cell-Verfahren von Baxter ist deutlich schneller als die konventionelle, auf Hühnereiern basierende Technologie, weil das Vero-Cell-Verfahren zur Herstellung den “nativen” Virus verwenden kann. Um das Virus in Hühnereiern anzüchten zu können, muss es dagegen zuerst modifiziert werden. Dieser Zeit-vorteil kann im Bedarfsfall einer Grippepandemie ausschlaggebend für die be-schleunigte Bereitstellung von Impfstoff sein. CELVAPAN wird in Bohumil (Tschechische Republik) hergestellt, in einer der weltweit größten und modernsten Zellkultur-Anlagen zur Impfstoffproduktion. Die Vero-Cell-Technologie setzt eine gängige und fortlaufende Säugetier-Zelllinie zur Impfstoffherstellung ein. Der Impfstoffkandidat gegen Vogelgrippe von Baxter geht auf den H5N1-Stamm A/Vietnam/1203/2004 zurück. Die Zusammensetzung und Struktur des enthaltenen Antigens sind mit dem gegenwärtig natürlich kursierenden Virus identisch. Durch die spezielle Formulierung des Baxter-Impfstoffs lässt sich der Zusatz von potenziell mit einem Nebenwirkungsrisiko behafteten Adjuvanzien zur Verstärkung der Immunantwort umgehen. Überzeugende Daten der klinischen Phase III-Studie In der Phase III-Studie löste CELVAPAN eine Immunantwort aus, die mit der körpereigenen Abwehrreaktion bei einer natürlichen Influenzainfektion ver-gleichbar ist. Das Ziel der randomisierten Phase III-Studie bestand in der Eva-luation der Sicherheit sowie der Immunantwort auf 7,5 µg der Impfung des Viet-nam-Stamms in zwei unterschiedlichen Altersgruppen (Erwachsene von 18 - 59 Jahren und ältere Personen über 60 Jahre). Die Immunantwort und die Persis-tenz der Antikörpertiter auf eine Auffrischungsimpfung mit dem identischen Stamm wurden ebenso untersucht wie die Reaktionen bei Anwendung eines anderen Virusstamms. Im Rahmen der Studie wurde auch die Fähigkeit des neuen Impfstoffs untersucht, eine Kreuzimmunität gegen unterschiedliche H5N1-Stämme zu induzieren. Insgesamt wurde der Impfstoff sowohl nach der ersten und zweiten Impfung als auch nach der Auffrischungsimpfung gut vertragen. Dabei zeigte sich das Si-cherheitsprofil des Impfstoffs als vergleichbar mit dem bereits zugelassener Impfstoffe gegen die saisonale Influenza. Häufigste Nebenwirkungen waren Schmerzen an der Injektionsstelle und Kopfschmerzen, Müdigkeit oder Un-wohlsein. Zufrieden stellende Immunantwort und gute Verträglichkeit belegt Eine positive Immunantwort war bereits nach der ersten Immunisierung zu re-gistrieren; die entsprechenden, funktionstüchtigen Antikörpertiter wurden mit ei-nem Mikroneutralisierungstest gemessen (50,7 Prozent in der Erwachsenen-Gruppe und 54,4 Prozent in der Gruppe der älteren Personen über 60 Jahre). Nach der zweiten Immunisierung wiesen 73 Prozent in der Erwachsenen- und 74 Prozent in der Gruppe der älteren Personen eine Serokonversion auf. Dies erlaubt den Rückschluss, dass der Impfstoff bei den älteren Personen über 60 Jahre zumindest in gleichem Maße immunogen wirkt wie bei Personen im Alter von 18 bis 59 Jahren. Eine Auffrischungsimpfung nach sechs Monaten mit Stämmen von A/Vietnam/1203/2004 oder A/Indonesien/05/2005 induzierte eine nachhaltige Auffrischungsreaktion. Die Auffrischungsimpfung mit einem anderen Stamm führte sowohl zu hohen Antikörperspiegeln gegen den initial geimpften als auch gegen den bei der Auffrischungsimpfung verwendeten Stamm, was auf eine protektive Kreuzimmunität hinweist. Im Juni 2008 publizierte das renommierte New England Journal of Medicine die Daten zu CELVAPAN der Phase I/II-Studie, aus denen hervorgeht, dass der Impfstoff die Endpunkte hinsichtlich Immunogenität (Auslösen einer funktionellen Immunantwort) und Sicherheit erfüllt hat. Dies waren die ersten publizierten Studienresultate aus klinischen Untersuchungen zu CELVAPAN, dem ersten auf Zellkulturen basierenden Impfstoff gegen Vogelgrippe. * * * Was versteht man unter einer Influenza-Pandemie? Unter einer Pandemie versteht man den weltweiten Ausbruch einer schweren und potenziell tödlichen Krankheit, die durch ein Agens ausgelöst wird, gegen das keine oder nur geringe Immunität in der Bevölkerung besteht und die sich rasch von Person zu Person weltweit ausbreiten kann. Nach bisherigen Erkenntnissen resultieren die meisten Fälle der Vogelgrippe aus direktem oder engem Kontakt mit infiziertem Geflügel (z. B. Haushuhn, Ente oder Truthahn) oder mit Material, das durch Ausscheidungen infizierter Vögel kontaminiert war. Die Vogelgrippe nimmt einen ungewöhnlich aggressiven klinischen Verlauf mit rascher Verschlechterungstendenz und hoher Mortalitätsrate.
